Summer Leaves Shadow

NuguchU (nu-Gu-Chu) means MY MoTHER IN gARIFUNA. This Quaint, Caribbean oasis is a living embodiment of an ode to Mother Nature. nUGUCHU is an off grid eco wellness sanctuary and B&B in a Black indigenous Garifuna community on the outskirts of Tela, Honduras.

We are on a mission to teach people how to live a low waste, self sustainable, holistic lifestyle so people can take care of themselves while taking care of the planet.

Nuguchu is a collective of nature lovers, who believe in the co-creation of a habitable earth, where all people have access to nutrient dense food, eco-friendly shelter, and dignified employment opportunities. We focus on the elimination of harmful toxins from living organisms and the transferring of wealth to indigenous communities that have historically been disenfranchised from financial institutions.

Our vision is to restore the earth back to the Garden of Eden and bring Nirvana to the physical world. With the elevation of consciousness, humans are becoming conscious consumers and before consuming, they think about their impact and make choices that are beneficial to all. Power is the ability to act. When we make a purchase we are not only buying a product we are also supporting an entity and it’s values, so we travel with our soul.

The Experience

Core Values

Self Determination

We take full responsibility for our well being

Oneness

We recognize the other person is us

Joy and Pleasure

We honor our pleasure and needs without harming nature (that doesn't just include the trees and animals, nature also includes you and me)

Compassion

With ruthless compassion for ourselves and others, we ask for consent before proceeding (i.e. before you take a fruit ask the plant if you can have it, before you take a photograph of someone ask if you can take it)

Love and Openness

We open our hearts and minds

Reciprocity

We give an offering to any space we enter ~ gifts can be physical, and it can be prayers/well wishes, a smile, or something as simple as a compliment. We are a gift to the collective.

Nuguchu is interested in building networks with other sanctuaries around the world that are plantbased vegan friendly, care about the earth and lead with love.

About Us

Nuguchu was started by Luisa Batiz, a Brooklyn Native raised in a Garifuna Honduran family. Her inspiration to start Nuguchu came from her grandmother, foremothers, childhood summer experiences living off grid in a village in Honduras, spiritual teachers, time in an ashram, and Caribbean carnivals. Luisa is joyful, zesty, and loves a good party!

Nuguchu means mother in Garifuna. At Nuguchu we honor Mother Nature. This Caribbean oasis is a living embodiment of an ode to our Great Mother. The Garifunas are descendants of marooned enslaved Africans and Arawak Indians that were exiled to Islands off the coast of Honduras in the late 1700s. Today, this indigenous community with an approximate population of 300,000, can be found living along the Caribbean coast of Central America and large metropolitan US cities, blending into Black and Brown communities.

Luisa’s Story Told by Her

I was born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn and spent my summers without running water or electricity in Sangrelaya — a small, lush indigenous Garifuna village on the Atlantic coast of Honduras.

I was the epitome of the classic bootstrap story — I excelled in my academics, was the first in my family to graduate from a great college and get a masters degree. I went from low income to being a high income earner & had a mostly fulfilling career in education, where I supported beautiful Black and Brown students with succeeding in college and beyond.

Although I experienced a lot of outward success, I didn’t feel like my work in the charter school sector was having the greatest impact on my people. I knew that if I was creating the criteria of success for my students they would not only be learning ELA and mathematics, they’d also be learning how to grow food and dive deep into the inner planes of their consciousness.

When I returned to Honduras in 2018 and saw the beach erosion, plastic pollution, many of my relatives fleeing the country for economic opportunities while selling off their farm lands and leaving their fields to the jungle — I knew I needed to return. By this time, I was deeply invested in the healing of my body through natural foods thanks to many teachers (Dr. Sebi, Dr Llaila Afrika, Botanica, Queen Thandiwe and Queen Afua). I also saw that many of the institutions we put our trust into were poisoning us, killing us, and exploiting us.

I think it’s insanity to fix a system that has no desire of sharing power with people, so I choose to create a new Earth with all the people that want to live in love, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, dance under the moon and stars and create a society centered on care. I choose to return to Eden and restore humanity to Nirvana. Will you be joining me? Let’s co-create.
